Summary Smash-Up on Interstate 5 (1976)

When a massive crash involving 39 vehicles and 14 deaths takes place on the freeway, the story then goes back in time 43 hours where we learn in countdown time segments, what brought the victims there.

A disaster movie opening with an enormous multi-vehicle crash on Interstate 5 in California. After the opening stunt-filled action, a flashback of the crash victims' lives prior to and leading up to the accident. The closing replays the entire "smash up" from various angles and in slow motion, depicting much carnage and indifference to the victims.

During the Fourth of July weekend, a multi-car pile up takes place on Interstate 5 just outside of San Diego. However, the various stories of some of the victims of the crash are shown, including an elderly couple dealing with the wife's terminal cancer diagnosis, a young man who is smitten with the girlfriend of a cop killer, as well as his partner hunting for them. Also, a middle aged rich woman has a fling with a trucker, who saved her from being raped by a motorcycle gang. All these stories come together in one gigantic crash.
